Restructured Possibilities is a piece composed/written for the Nichols Tower, which was supported by Access Contemporary Music and the Architecture Foundation of Chicago. While researching the tower and looking at pictures, I was struck by its monumental presence in the neighborhood – it being the largest structure in the surrounding area. The tower’s prolific nature inspired me to portray it through the resonant sound of the double bass. Further inspiration grew from learning that an artists’ commune is being created inside the towering building. Creating such an open, and welcome space is an effort to redevelop theneighborhood and bring to life a vibrant culture in the community. Using multiple gestures and sounds, I portray the myriad of artists that will reside in the building and all the future collaborations that will develop within the Tower.
