Program Notes:

These four pieces for piano were written during my undergraduate years, and acted as studies in which I could perfect and explore writing for the instrument. The first piece acts as an etude in the high register of the piano, making use of fast scalar passages and multiple time signature changes. The second piece explores the use of the sostenuto pedal, and embraces resonance with quick moving lines. The third is an image based work in which one descends an endless set of stairs. It makes use of heavy polyrhythmic counterpoint at a slow tempo creating an almost improvisatory feel to it. The final piece encompasses the full range of the piano, and takes advantage of large skips and intricate melodic lines.
